The first edition of Tools of the Trade was part of the annual HKWALLS Festival in the spring of 2021. This foundational exhibition was an east-meets-west documentation of the tools, traditions and techniques that have facilitated the works of street artists for the last seventy years. From early stencils and spray cans to the introduction and integration of complex and modern technology, this exhibition offered up a rare and incredibly diverse glimpse into the practical demands of street art and graffiti.

STERN ROCKWELL

In two separate conversations, artist Stern Rockwell discussed the culture and tools of graffiti through first hand accounts of growing up in Brooklyn, New York in the 1980s, painting subway trains.

HKwalls sat down with Lau Kin Wai, connoisseur of Chinese calligraphy and ink paintings, photographer, restauranteur, food critic and friend of the Late King of Kowloon, for a public discussion about the King, their encounters together and Lau's passion for the arts.
